I’d love to show something more designey today but I’ve been spending today sorting out my room, and will shortly been returning to doing so. Just thought I’d stop to take a snap of my reorganised work area and inflict it on you all.

Spent some time briefly updating the sidebar of a client and friend to include their latest tweets. This is the end result.

These are some form elements I recently styled up. They make use of a mix of HTML5’s new input attributes, namely placeholder, as well as some CSS3 on the visual appearance side of things.

Keeping myself occupied

Posted on by David Turner

Today I’ve been doing a little bit of writing.. CSS for a webmail that looked horrible, and creating a non-legalese contract draft for me to review at some point later today.

Past that I’ve been enjoying a weekend taking it easy and reading some of the books that were delivered yesterday. Already finished one of them. This doesn’t bode well for my continued ‘having stuff to read’ plan.

By way of procrastination today I’m taking a break from doing anything. I’m waiting for feedback from clients on my projects at the moment, or on University for my Portfolio Redesign.

Today’s photo is the complete pile of books/magazines I’ve ordered or been given as gifts in the last month. Quite a nice mix of web design and fiction novels.

This is a snapshot of a WIP section of a site I’m working on. The icons attached to each link are generated using an embedded font, rather than making use of images, alongside some rather funky pseudo-css selectors.

Following on from yesterday’s post I’ve played about with the layout of the upcoming gig posters layout some more. They’re now a bit bigger, which helps make them a bit more visible, as well as showing off the artwork in a bit more detail.

I may tweak this layout a bit more in the future but I’m going to be focusing my attention on other bits of the site, such as the layout for individual pages. I know how I want them to look, I just need to convert it from what I see in my head to what I want on the screen.

A work in progress bit of an upcoming site I’m working on. I mentioned on Twitter that I love the artwork I’ve been provided to use in laying things out on the site. I’m not one for designing printed stuff myself, but I really like the work I’m being sent to use on this project.

The styling is a bit rough at this point, and I’ll definitely need to play about with things a bit more, but so far I like the direction things are taking with this bit of the site.

A couple of other tweaks I’ve made to my Portfolio redesign, tweaking the layout of the intro text as well as the size of the buttons.

In an attempt to get back into the swing of coding, post-holiday, I am getting back to work on my portfolio’s redesign before I even attempt to get back to work on client stuff.

Based on some feedback I’ve received I’ve spent a little bit of time playing around with my navigation. I’m strongly considering dropping the whole ‘Home’ link from it, as the logo points there already.

Another very blurry sketch of stuff I’ve been thinking up. Once I have access to a scanner I’ll replace this and the few other images that’ve been blurry these past few days.

A very blurry photo of a possible heading design for posts on this blog. Lacking a scanner really sucks at times. I couldn’t get this sketch to show up nicely.

One of a few sketches I’m setting up to post over the next few days, to cover my butt whilst I’m travelling/sleeping. This one is a selection of Icon ideas I sketched up for a redesign to this blog that I’m considering.

Playing with LESS/960

Posted on by David Turner

I’m sure those of you that have been following me have seen me rambling on about LESS. A while back I brought up that I’d been playing with adapting the 960 Grid System over to make use of LESS mixins. It worked really well.

What I hadn’t thought of was the additional benefits of making this change. The original CSS Framework allows you to make use of a few options - 12, 16 & 24. The first thing I realised, when first playing around with my mixin version, was that I could use pretty much any number of columns, just by changing a variable passed into the mixins.

An additional benefit that springs to mind as particularly awesome though, is how easy the mixins allow for me to tweak the grid layout subtly. I’m not stuck using .grid_1, .grid_2 etc… I can use any size I want. If 1 column is too small, but 2 columns are too big, I can go in between that, say 1.5 columns. So long as the ultimate number equals the relevant number of columns things work out flawlessly so far.

The testing will continue. I still need to implement a few more bits and pieces to fully transfer the Grid System to LESS but, so far, I’m ridiculously happy with how things are turning out.
